So Vijay Shankar is finally making his debut in Lanka Premier League ah . He's going to be sole Indian player this season for Kandy Royals, which is quite interesting.
And this is for the upcoming LPL 2026,the sixth edition only . The tournament is set to start on July 17,2026 and final will be on August 8,2026 . So one full month of cricket action.
During the recent draft,Avishka Fernando was number one overall pick, going to the defending champions,SC Jaffna Kings . And that team is already looking very strong .
They have also picked up experienced players like all-rounder David Wiese and Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran . Seems like they are very serious about defending their title again this year.
And tbh, this is where things get interesting.
Because Kandy Royals have also made some big moves . They've got Moeen Ali and Wanindu Hasaranga, plus local star Angelo Mathews . Adding Vijay Shankar, who has that 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup experience,to this mix is a big deal .
Few things standing out clearly from this announcement:
- Vijay Shankar is the only Indian representative for LPL 2026 season.
- Over 650 overseas cricketers registered for the draft, which shows league is growing .
- Kandy Royals have built a strong team with Moeen Ali,Hasaranga and now Shankar .
The other franchises like Colombo Kaps,Dambulla Sixers, and Galle Gallants have also strengthened their teams,so competition will be tough . It's not just about two teams .
Even the officials are saying good things . Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela mentioned the impressive quality of players in the draft . And Anil Mohan Sankhdhar from IPG Group also said the response from players is very positive and the league's reputation is growing globally.
But all eyes will be on Shankar,I think . Being the only Indian player comes with its own pressure and expectations… let's see how he handles it on Sri Lankan pitches…
