This WMO warning honestly feels like one more reminder that climate story is not slowing down at all . Every few months, some new report comes and numbers look more uncomfortable than last time.
World Meteorological Organization has now said global average temperatures may stay alarmingly high over next five years . This comes from WMO report titled 'Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update 2026-2035' ,which uses data from multiple climate institutes, including Britain’s Met Office .
And numbers are not small ah. Report says temperatures could range from 1.3 to 1.9 degrees Celsius above historical average of 1850-1900 . That is exactly why Paris Agreement discussion keeps coming back again and again.
Most worrying part is that one of years between 2026 and 2030 could even surpass 2024 as hottest year on record . Just imagine,2024 already felt like warning sign and now report is saying hotter year may be coming soon.
Few things standing out clearly in this report:
- Arctic temperatures are predicted to be 2.8 degrees Celsius above average.
- El Niño conditions are expected to influence temperatures in coming years.
- Global temperature anomalies point toward pressing need for climate action .
Lead author Leon Hermanson also said,"There is El Niño predicted for end of 2026,which increases chances of following year,2027,being the next record-breaking year." And tbh, this line is quite scary because it connects one climate event with another heat record so directly.
Report also says individual years crossing temperature limits does not mean long-term goals are impossible. But at same time,it is hard to feel relaxed when these records keep getting broken again and again.
What feels more disturbing is that these increases are not being presented like random statistical jumps. They fit into bigger pattern of climatic disruption already being seen globally, affecting ecosystems and human societies in different ways.
And this is where whole thing becomes personal also. Heatwaves, water stress, food issues, changing seasons… these are not just charts in some report anymore. If 2027 really becomes next record-breaking year, then what exactly are we waiting for…
