This Romania drone attack has now created serious tension in Europe, and honestly,it is not small thing ah when incident happens inside territory of NATO and European Union (EU) member state .
Italy's Deputy Foreign Minister Edmondo Cirielli reacted strongly after Russian drone attack in Galati city, where drone struck residential building and injured two individuals . He called it "extremely serious incident" and asked for renewed commitment to international law and solidarity among European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nations .
And this is exactly why many European leaders are sounding alarm rn. Conflict involving Russia and Ukraine is already dangerous, but when drone crosses into Romania and hits civilian area, whole security conversation changes immediately.
Cirielli also said,"No war can justify the involvement of innocent civilians or crossing of allied countries’ borders," while expressing solidarity with Romania after attack . That line pretty much captures mood in Europe right now.
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte have publicly condemned attack .
- Romanian Foreign Minister Toiu Oana confirmed Romania has summoned the Russian Ambassador over incident .
- Romania's President Nicusor Dan convened the Supreme Council of National Defence to discuss security implications .
Romanian officials have also confirmed that drone was of Russian origin . Toiu Oana said Ministry of National Defence confirmed origins, and Romanian government now plans to communicate consequences for diplomatic relations with Russia.
And tbh, this is where situation feels bigger than one drone strike only. If allied country’s border is crossed and civilians are injured, then pressure comes on EU and NATO to show that such violation will not be brushed aside.
There is also expectation of discussions at European level about potential sanctions . But at same time, every such step brings another layer of tension between Russia and Europe.
What makes this uncomfortable is simple fact that ordinary civilians in Galati city paid price for wider war they did not start . And now question is how far Europe will go in responding without letting situation spiral even more…
