One fresh controversy has now started around Harappan seal, and honestly, this one has touched very sensitive nerve . American historian Audrey Truschke challenged Ministry of Culture post which identified seal as Shiva-Pashupati,and after that reaction from Hindu leaders in Ayodhya came very strongly .
Truschke’s point was that figure on seal represents an Eurasian deity referred to as "lord of animals" . But this did not go down well at all with many Hindu leaders, who accused her of trying to tarnish India’s history and cultural identity.
And tbh, this is where debate becomes bigger than one academic disagreement only.
Mahant Sitaram Das Maharaj of Saket Bhavan temple strongly condemned Audrey Truschke’s statement . He said such international attempts to jeopardize India’s historical narrative will not be tolerated, and her claim was called "completely unacceptable" by leaders opposing her view.
For many seers,Harappan seal is not just one old archaeological object sitting in museum . They see it as symbol connected with India’s Sanatan tradition, spiritual memory and cultural identity . So when someone outside India questions Shiva-Pashupati interpretation,it naturally becomes emotional issue also .
Few things standing out in this whole controversy:
- Audrey Truschke challenged Ministry of Culture post identifying Harappan seal as Shiva-Pashupati.
- Hindu leaders demanded that she apologize and retract her statements regarding Pashupati seal .
- Ministry of Culture said seal reflects India’s enduring cultural identity and living heritage.
Mahant Sitaram Das Maharaj also criticized Truschke for lacking understanding of India’s rich cultural heritage . He even expressed concern that there may be some conspiracy to undermine India’s culture, and that kind of statement shows how seriously this issue is being taken in Ayodhya circles .
Another prominent figure,Mahant Deveshacharya Ji Maharaj, went even sharper . He said United States has shown animosity towards India and suggested disturbed mindset among its leaders . He accused them of running campaign to undermine India’s image and culture, calling such actions wholly unacceptable.
But on other side,Truschke has defended her position too . She argued that historical discussion needs accuracy, and that understanding India’s past matters . So basically, both sides are claiming they are protecting history, but from totally different angles.
Ministry of Culture’s original social media post had highlighted seal’s yogic posture and its relevance to contemporary Indian spirituality . It also said India is living custodian of this heritage, and later stressed that civilizational thread from ancient sites still continues in modern India.
And honestly, this whole thing shows how archaeology in India is never just archaeology ah . One seal, one interpretation, and suddenly it becomes question of faith, civilization, foreign narratives and identity… so where does history end and sentiment begin?
