On May 29, 2026 ,Putin told journalists that current battlefield situation is moving in such direction that Russia can say conflict is close to ending . His exact words were,“The situation on the battlefield is developing in such a way that it gives us the right to say that situation is nearing its end.”
But at same time,he also refused to give any fixed timeline . And that part matters,because saying something is near end and actually ending it are two very different things,especially when military operations are still active.
Putin also said Russia is open for talks on Ukraine . He stated,“We’ve never refused to negotiate.” But then he added that while some contacts are still maintained,formal negotiations are not really happening right now.

He also went back to 2014,claiming actions of EU countries forced Russia to act in defense of Crimea and Donetsk and Luhansk regions . This is same historical framing Russia has been using for long time,and clearly Moscow is not moving away from that argument .
