This Venezuela oil story feels like one of those sudden political turns where everyone has to pause for second . After years of sanctions, anger and tension,President Donald Trump is now talking about Venezuela like important energy partner for United States .
During Cabinet meeting at White House,Trump said Venezuela’s oil sector is being “professionalised for the first time ever.” And honestly, that line itself shows how big shift he is trying to project here .
He also said money from Venezuelan oil sales is now being protected through US oversight . According to him, this is different from earlier situation where corruption was big issue and revenues were being stolen.
Trump claimed that since January 3,over 10 million barrels of oil from Venezuela have been delivered to US . He said revenues are being deposited into accounts monitored by Treasury Department and audited by KPMG .
And then came his direct line,“The money is not being stolen anymore,” which is clearly meant to send message that this arrangement is helping Venezuelan people, not just oil companies or political insiders.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Venezuela’s oil industry is being described as undergoing professionalization with US oversight.
- Geopolitical energy strategy is being linked to regional stability and energy supply security.
- Increased oil production is being framed with US and Venezuela together surpassing output of Russia and Saudi Arabia .
But tbh, this is where situation gets more complicated . Secretary of War Pete Hegseth also backed Trump’s view and said Venezuela has role in US regional security strategy. He connected US Southern Command’s recent activities in Venezuela with wider effort to stabilize region and push back against cartel influence.
Hegseth also linked higher Venezuelan oil production to global energy stability, especially with tensions rising in Middle East . His point was that more oil could help reduce fuel prices worldwide, and that is not small thing ah.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum also praised administration’s energy policies and tied surge in oil production to Trump . So clearly,White House is trying to present this as energy win, security move and anti-corruption model all at same time .
And still, big question is hanging there . If Venezuela is suddenly becoming close energy partner after years of pressure and distrust, how long can this new arrangement actually hold…
