Tripura power update sounds technical at first, but honestly, this is one of those news items which directly touches daily life . Electricity supply, smart meters, loss reduction, gas shortage… all this finally comes down to whether people get stable power or not.
On May 31 ,Tripura's Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that 95% of work funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) is nearing completion . This project is meant to strengthen power distribution framework across Tripura and make electricity supply more reliable for residents.
And if final stages really conclude by June, then it will be big relief for power sector in state . Not flashy news maybe, but not small thing ah,especially for households and businesses dealing with supply issues.
During meeting with Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal Khattar and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha,Minister Nath also discussed progress of several power projects . Smart meter installation is expected to be completed by October, and that is being seen as part of wider reform to improve efficiency and reduce losses.
Few numbers standing out clearly here:
- Over 3 lakh smart meters have already been installed, with more planned by October.
- Aggregate Technical and Commercial loss has come down from 40% in 2018 to 18.23% currently.
- A new 120 MW gas turbine project is planned to improve Tripura's energy output .
And tbh,the drop in AT&C loss from 40% in 2018 to 18.23% currently is actually serious progress . Losses in power sector are not just some accounting issue only, they affect billing, supply quality and money available for upgrades .
Minister Nath also said central government funding has helped in reaching these milestones . Right now,Tripura's peak electricity demand stands at 542 MW,while state generates 365 MW and buys remaining 177 MW from market . But power availability is still getting affected because of shortage of natural gas supply.
At same time, state is also working under Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to promote solar energy . Rooftop solar power systems with cumulative capacity of 12.11 MW have already been installed, and target is 150 MW of solar capacity . That gap is big,but direction is clear .
Tripura is also pushing prepaid meters, with thousands already connected . Along with that, projects under Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) are moving ahead, where 95% of loss-reduction work is completed and remaining tasks are expected to wrap up by July .
Then there is upgrade of 63 MW gas turbine power plant into 120 MW combined-cycle facility, which is projected to be completed by March 2029 . So yes, plans are moving, but natural gas shortage and execution timelines will decide how much people actually feel this change in daily life…
