This Tamil Nadu university appointment issue has suddenly become much bigger than one minister’s comment . And honestly, whenever Vice Chancellor appointments and state rights come together, politics becomes heated very fast only .
Tamil Nadu's Higher Education Minister P. Viswanathan said on May 28,2026 that new government under TVK will not compromise on rights of state . This came after his remarks in Madurai created backlash from DMK,VCK,CPI,and PMK .
What triggered whole thing was his earlier comment suggesting new administration is not bound to continue every policy of previous government, especially around Chief Minister's role as Chancellor of universities . That line clearly did not go down well with opposition parties.
But after criticism started building,Viswanathan called press briefing and said his comments were misunderstood . He tried to make it clear that Tamil Nadu’s rights are not being diluted.
"Our stand is very clear. rights of the state are of utmost importance. As an MLA, as a Minister, and as a citizen of Tamil Nadu, I can assertively state that we will not compromise on this," he declared .
Few things standing out in this controversy:
- P. Viswanathan says government will protect constitutional powers of Tamil Nadu .
- Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will decide on Vice Chancellor appointments after talks with Higher Education Department officials and cabinet colleagues.
- Previous DMK government had shifted power to appoint Vice Chancellors from Governor to Chief Minister.
And this is where matter becomes politically sensitive ah . Because previous DMK regime had pushed these amendments as part of larger state autonomy argument in education governance. So any hint that new TVK government may rethink it was obviously going to invite strong reaction.
Viswanathan also said his earlier remarks were more general in nature and not aimed at one specific situation . He insisted that after discussions, final call will be taken by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and cabinet.
At same time,he also said neither Congress nor TVK will compromise on rights of Tamil Nadu's citizens . That line seems clearly meant to calm fears that state may surrender some administrative powers around universities .
But question still stays there… when actual Vice Chancellor appointment decision comes up,will this government follow previous path fully or quietly change direction?
