Key Takeaways

  • Supreme Court updated on NEET reform status
  • Most recommendations from HLCE are implemented
  • Biometric authentication introduced for NEET candidates

After whole NEET-UG 2024 controversy, any update on exam reforms is bound to get attention . And this time,K. Radhakrishnan, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO),has told Supreme Court that many recommendations made by High-Level Committee of Experts (HLCE) are either already implemented or currently in progress.

And honestly, students and parents will look at this with mixed feelings only . On one side, reforms sound good. But after kind of anxiety NEET-UG 2024 created, people will naturally ask whether changes are actually strong enough on ground.

In affidavit submitted to apex court,Radhakrishnan said these steps are aimed at making examination process by National Testing Agency (NTA) more transparent and fair . HLCE was set up by Union Ministry of Education in June 2024 after concerns came up during NEET-UG exams .

Committee also seems to have spoken to wide set of people before giving recommendations . State governments, police authorities, academicians and student groups were consulted, and through MyGov portal, committee received 37,144 responses from different stakeholders . That is not small number ah .

Few key things standing out here:

  • 101 recommendations made — Covering examination reforms and data security.
  • State involvement increased — State-Level Coordination Committees now play a key role .
  • Introduction of biometric authentication — Aadhaar-based system implemented for NEET-UG candidates.

Radhakrishnan also mentioned that State-Level Coordination Committees (SLCCs) and District-Level Coordination Committees (DLCCs) have been set up and are actively involved in NEET examination administration now . This part matters because earlier many people felt exam system was too centralised and local-level monitoring was not enough .

Another big point from affidavit is that more than 99.5% of examination centres for NEET-UG 2026 are now government institutions . Idea seems to be better oversight, less private-centre risk and more control over exam environment.

And then comes security side . Aadhaar-based biometric authentication has been introduced as part of initial phase of proposed DIGI-EXAM system . Along with that,multi-layer frisking mechanism, expanded CCTV surveillance in examination centres and mobile jammers are also being used to prevent electronic malpractice.

But tbh, exam trust is not rebuilt just by adding machines and committees . Students want confidence that paper will be safe, centres will be controlled, and if something goes wrong, action will be fast and visible.

Affidavit also says shift towards computer-based testing format for NEET-UG is being considered in consultation with Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare . That could change exam experience in big way,but for millions of students across different states, question is still same… will system become fairer in reality,or just more complicated…
