Just saw the new job numbers for May 2026,and it’s a very mixed bag of a situation rn. On one hand,it looks stable overall, but when you dig into details, some sectors are doing great while others are really struggling.
The biggest news is insurance sector, which is apparently booming with over 19% growth year-on-year . That's not small thing ah. main Naukri JobSpeak Index went up to 2836 from 2807 last year,so there is some upward movement for sure.
And it's not just insurance only . BPO/ITES industry also grew by over 9% . Even healthcare and hospitality showed some promise with over 6% and 5% growth. So some good news is there for skilled professionals.
What’s really interesting is where hiring is happening . Big cities like Hyderabad are up by over 6%,but emerging cities like Coimbatore and Surat are showing even better growth at over 8% and 9% respectively.
But tbh,the real story is huge demand for tech talent. AI and ML roles just surged by 22% . And for senior professionals in these roles, hiring went up by 32% . Clearly, companies are desperate for experienced tech people. Fresher hiring also saw 7% rise, mostly for customer-facing jobs.
Few things standing out in this report:
- Insurance sector is leading charge with impressive 19% year-on-year growth.
- Traditional sectors like banking,IT,and auto are seeing hiring declines from 6% to 15%.
- AI and ML roles are in massive demand, with a 22% surge in hiring.
And honestly, this is where things get uncomfortable. While tech is booming,so many traditional sectors are facing decline . Banking, telecom, pharma,IT,auto, education, and even oil & gas saw hiring drop between 6% to 15% . That’s a lot of major industries seeing a slowdown at same time.
Even Hitesh Oberoi, the CEO of Info Edge, said something similar . He mentioned that while job market is stable, the demand for high-value talent in AI/ML is what’s really driving things . He pointed out that hiring for these special roles, with salaries above ₹30 LPA,grew by huge 27% .
But it’s not all bad for other areas . Global Capability Centers (GCCs) showed healthy growth of over 8% in major metros, with Chennai leading with an incredible 25% increase . FMCG sector also had positive momentum, especially in southern cities like Hyderabad and Chennai .
It really feels like job market is splitting into two different worlds . One world is for AI/ML experts and people in very specific sectors who are getting great opportunities . And then there's the other world for traditional jobs that seems to be shrinking. Makes you wonder where this is all heading…
