Reading about Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's work on stray dogs and it's actually quite impressive . They are reporting an 89% sterilization rate under their program, which is a huge number for any Indian city.
And this is not just random work,it's part of bigger strategy to make city rabies-free by year 2030 . They are doing large-scale vaccinations, microchipping, and even one new scientific dog census to manage the situation properly .
According to Naresh Rajput, who is head of the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD),Ahmedabad has successfully registered 19,535 pet dogs . He pointed out that this is a stark contrast to other cities like Mumbai where they have struggled to register more than 1,000 dogs.
And honestly, this shows how much community engagement matters . It’s one thing for govt to make rules, but people following them is another thing ah .
They are also using some modern tech for this . The AMC has adopted RFID microchipping for both stray dogs and cattle, which helps them track vaccination and sterilization histories easily . Plus,a new scientific census was launched in April 2026 to get an accurate count of the dog population across all wards.
Few numbers that stand out:
- Since 2019-20,around 1,88,828 stray dogs have been sterilized .
- whole effort has cost about ₹18.11 crore so far.
- This year alone,they have given 7,571 anti-rabies vaccinations .
And people are apparently seeing results on ground only . Local observations say the number of puppies in residential areas has gone down a lot,and even stray dog groups have become smaller . They are even using an app-based system for geo-tagging and real-time monitoring to find and sterilize remaining dogs.
But it's not just about catching dogs . The AMC's strategy also includes community awareness campaigns targeting schools, health institutions, and public spaces to educate people about responsible pet ownership.
This whole thing sounds very planned and effective, tbh . The full census is expected to be completed by March 2027,so we'll know more then . But it makes you wonder if other cities can actually copy this success,or if Ahmedabad is just one unique case…
