So I was just reading about Jammu and Kashmir government making some big moves in AYUSH sector . Under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah,it seems they are getting serious about Ayurveda,Yoga,Unani and all .
And a major meeting happened on June 2,2026 where Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo approved the State Annual Action Plan for 2026-27 . The main focus is on building up AYUSH infrastructure and pushing for wellness tourism.
Dulloo apparently said that J&K has huge potential to become a top wellness hub, like Kerala or Maharashtra . He wants to create a proper wellness policy by working with private players too. This is actually a good idea ah,given natural beauty of the region.
And honestly, this tourism angle could be a game-changer if done right.
He also stressed that AYUSH services should be available in every single medical college and district hospital across the Union Territory . That's very ambitious goal.
Few things they seem to be focusing on:
- Making sure AYUSH services and welfare programmes are accessible to everyone
- Setting up herbal gardens in government institutions to help local economies
- Integrating AYUSH into rehabilitation for substance abuse victims under 'Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan'
But Shailendra Kumar, the Additional Chief Secretary of Finance, made very practical point . He said it's better to consolidate and improve existing facilities first instead of spreading resources too thin on many new things. This part makes lot of sense.
The money involved is not small either . The Ministry of AYUSH has tentatively given ₹58.539 crore, but whole J&K plan is for ₹91.997 crore because demand is growing.
Commissioner Secretary M. Raju also mentioned that this plan was made after proper consultation with AYUSH functionaries at district level only,so it's not just some top-down decision.
The whole thing sounds very promising on paper… using local herbs, involving Self-Help Groups, creating jobs, and promoting a healthier image for J&K . But will it all translate to real change on the ground… that is real question…
