This Phagwara killing is honestly very disturbing because it does not look like random crime at all . RTI activist and lawyer Simranjit Singh was shot dead on Saturday,and whole thing has again raised serious questions about safety in Punjab.
Attack happened near Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway,where two motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly came and fired at Singh multiple times . Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora confirmed that Singh was shot at close range,and two bullets struck his head.
And this was not first time also . Singh had earlier survived another attack in Jalandhar,which already showed that he was living under serious threat . Still,now he has been killed in broad manner near highway,and that is not small thing ah.
Singh was known for filing petitions in Punjab and Haryana High Court and complaints to Enforcement Directorate (ED),especially against state Cabinet minister Sanjeev Arora,who is currently incarcerated . His work was around exposing corruption and demanding accountability,so naturally he had made powerful enemies .
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Second assassination attempt — Singh was previously targeted but survived another attack.
- Political backlash — Leaders like Sukhbir Singh Badal have condemned the murder as an attack on democracy.
- Call for thorough investigation — Political figures demand an independent probe into Singh's murder.
Police recovered .32 bore pistol and a 12 bore rifle from the scene,which makes this look planned and not sudden fight . Singh's mobile devices were also found nearby,and that detail is making people ask more questions about what exactly happened before shooting.
Deputy Inspector General Naveen Singla said police may seek help from Counter-Intelligence wing for investigation . And tbh,looking at nature of case,normal murder probe may not satisfy public mood right now .
Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal called it direct assault on democracy and transparency . He also pointed to Singh's earlier legal actions challenging constitutionality of Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Amendment) Act,2026,and demanded proper investigation .
State Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also questioned law and order situation in Punjab and government's ability to protect citizens . And that question is going to stay because if someone already survived one attack and still got killed later,then what protection really existed…
