The Rajasthan Police Cyber Crime Branch has raised an alarm about the escalating threat of cyber fraud facilitated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deepfake technologies. In a public advisory released on May 20, 2026, officials warned that cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting AI tools, such as Google Gemini and OpenAI ChatGPT, to perpetrate fraud against unsuspecting citizens. These technologies allow fraudsters to bypass critical security measures, particularly those related to Aadhaar biometric systems.
According to V.K. Singh, Additional Director General of Police (Cyber Crime), these criminals typically gather personal information, including an individual’s Aadhaar number and mobile details, through phishing schemes and social engineering tactics. Once they have this information, they can manipulate mobile numbers linked to Aadhaar using Common Service Centres (CSC) or Update Client Lite (UCL) kits. This manipulation enables them to redirect OTPs, granting unauthorized access to digital accounts.
- Deepfake Technology Usage — Fraudsters are using AI-powered deepfake technology to create realistic fake videos that can deceive facial recognition systems.
- Locking Aadhaar Biometrics — Citizens are advised to lock their Aadhaar biometrics using the mAadhaar app to prevent unauthorized access.
- Monitoring Aadhaar History — Regular checks on Aadhaar authentication history are recommended to spot any suspicious activities.
The advisory also highlights the alarming capability of deepfake technology in generating highly convincing fake visuals that replicate an individual's facial expressions and movements. Such technology poses a significant risk as it can mislead facial authentication systems used for accessing services like DigiLocker and online banking, leading to potentially fraudulent transactions.
In light of these threats, the Rajasthan Police urges citizens to take immediate measures to protect their personal information. Locking Aadhaar biometrics via the official UIDAI website or mAadhaar app is strongly recommended. Citizens should also remain vigilant and respond promptly to any SMS alerts regarding changes to their Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers. In cases of suspected fraud, reporting the incident to local police or through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal is crucial. Such proactive steps are necessary to safeguard against the growing menace of cybercrime fueled by technological advancements.
