This Pune incident is honestly very disturbing because Vanita Gorakhnath Patole was not doing some personal work there, she was doing Census-2027 duty . And still, situation reportedly turned into abuse, violence and serious injury for her family.
Vanita Gorakhnath Patole works with Pune Municipal Corporation and serves as sepoy at Bibwewadi Regional Office . On May 27,she had gone for door-to-door survey in Minatai Thackeray Vasahat area when local residents allegedly verbally abused her during work.
And instead of matter calming down, next day it became worse .
On May 28,Vanita returned to same area with her son and colleagues to continue census work . According to her complaint, people surrounded them and confrontation quickly became violent . She said attackers even called for reinforcements before assault started.
Witnesses reportedly said group had around 10 to 12 individuals and they used kicks, punches and stones during attack . Vanita and her son were left severely injured, and her son suffered significant injury . Not small thing ah,especially when person is on official duty.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Vanita Gorakhnath Patole was attacked while performing duties related to Census-2027.
- Swargate Police have filed case against several individuals under various sections of law .
- Authorities are stressing public awareness and cooperation with census activities in local communities .
And what Vanita said after incident feels really painful. Her words were,"I was merely performing my official and national duty. I had no personal dispute with anyone. Yet, my son and I were brutally beaten... I want justice." She also described humiliation during attack, including clothes being torn and attempts made to steal her belongings.
Police confirmed case has been registered against alleged attackers, including Vikas Navnath More and his family members . They said necessary legal action will be taken . Senior Police Inspector Yashwant Nikam also reassured that police support would be given to census workers who need it.
But tbh, this raises bigger uncomfortable question about safety of public servants doing basic field work . Census workers have to enter local areas, ask questions, deal with public mood, and if cooperation is missing, things can get risky very fast.
Police investigation is still going on,and citizens have been urged to cooperate with census operations for betterment of community . But after incident like this, one question stays in mind… how many field workers will feel safe going back into same kind of lanes tomorrow?
