Fuel situation in Maharashtra has become one of those topics where people start getting nervous very fast . And honestly, with geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains and rumours around possible price hikes, that nervousness is not surprising also.
Maharashtra government, along with public sector oil marketing companies like BPCL ,IOCL ,and HPCL , has now assured people that petrol, diesel and LPG availability is adequate across state . Basically, message is clear: don’t panic buy.
As per Mihir Ganesh Joshi ,the State Level Coordinator (Oil Industry) in Maharashtra, public sector oil companies have managed uninterrupted fuel supplies even after sudden jump in demand . This rise is being linked to seasonal agricultural activities and fear of upcoming price hikes .
And numbers are not small ah . From May 1 to May 21, 2026,OMCs supplied 402 TKL of petrol and 789 TKL of diesel . Then from May 22 to May 28 alone, another 284 TKL of diesel was supplied .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Fuel demand spike of 43.37% was recorded in diesel during late May .
- 332 inspections were conducted to curb black marketing and hoarding .
- 75,595 litres of illegal diesel was seized as part of action against illicit activities.
At same time, overall petrol demand went up by 17.24% and diesel demand by 27.25% during month . Still,OMCs have apparently kept retail outlets running, which is exactly what people want to hear rn .
But there have been isolated mismatches in few hinterland areas . Government is saying situation is under control, but for people living in those pockets, even small shortage can feel like big problem only .
To stop black marketing, district collectors have been told to carry out inspections under Essential Commodities Act, 1955 . So far, nine FIRs have been filed and 15 arrests have been made . That shows authorities are not taking hoarding lightly.
And tbh, this is where public behaviour matters too . If everyone rushes to fill extra fuel out of fear, pressure on supply chain becomes worse without actual shortage.
For now, government and OMCs are asking citizens not to panic buy and are saying smooth fuel availability will continue across Maharashtra . But with demand rising, rumours spreading and global tensions still hanging in background, people will keep watching petrol pumps closely…
