So this whole debate about Pune's crime situation is getting very heated now . Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule called city the "capital of criminals," which is really strong thing to say ah.
This all started after that terrible illicit liquor incident which killed 21 people . And now,in response to her statement,Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has come out with a full nine-page letter defending his force.
And tbh,he came with all data . In his letter,he is saying crime is actually going down in Pune. He shared stats from January 1 to May 27,2026 showing big drops in major crime .
According to him, chain snatching is down by 56%,robbery by 36%,and even vehicle theft is down by 28% . He also said murder rate declined by 10.5%,and most recent cases are because of domestic disputes, not random attacks.
He even pointed out that Pune ranks 18th out of 19 big cities as per National Crime Records Bureau,so it's one of safer ones.
The police have been taking some major actions too:
- Over 1,000 criminals have been targeted and more than 200 cases processed under MCOCA.
- Drug seizures worth ₹20 crore have been made in the city .
- They also helped bust a huge international drug racket worth ₹3,700 crore .
And honestly, this is where things get complicated.
Commissioner Kumar says the public perception of rising crime is mainly because of five big incidents that happened in May in short period of time . To make people feel safer, police have increased patrolling everywhere in city now.
He also made a point about social media, asking people to please stop sharing unverified stats that make police look bad . He said constructive criticism is okay, but the force needs support to protect Pune's good name as an "IT and Education Hub."
But at end of day,it's one politician's statement against official police data . So who do you believe… and more importantly,do people on ground actually feel safer? That's the real question…
