So that Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, which was such big deal for Mahayuti alliance during elections,is now facing some serious money problems . And tbh,it looks like a lot of women are getting caught in middle of it all.
The scheme has become huge financial burden for state, costing around ₹36,000 crore every year . That is not small thing ah. So now government is changing its approach from giving money to everyone to only giving it to selected people.
And to do this, they did one massive e-KYC verification which ended on April 30,2026 . The result was pretty shocking. number of women getting money dropped from high of 2.46 crore to just about 1.66 crore.
That means almost 73 lakh to 80 lakh women were suddenly removed from the list . And this has obviously started big political fight between the ruling Mahayuti and opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi.
And honestly, this is where whole situation gets uncomfortable .
The government gave few reasons for these cuts.
- Over 50 lakh beneficiaries were removed because they didn't complete verification process .
- About 12 lakh women were cut for having income over the ₹2.5 lakh limit.
- And nearly 5 lakh were flagged because RTO data showed they had registered vehicles .
Now Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is saying the Ladki Bahin Yojana will continue for sure . And Aditi Tatkare, the minister for this department, also clarified that no applications were outright rejected.
But opposition leader Supriya Sule is not buying it . She has demanded an independent audit to check where all this taxpayer money is actually going. She wants to know who real beneficiaries are, which seems fair enough.
This whole thing has created lot of unrest, especially in rural areas . The opposition is accusing government of a "use and throw" policy after winning elections. They got the votes, and now they are cutting the benefits…
Experts are suggesting that maybe government needs to combine this scheme with other social security programs to manage costs . But that doesn't help the women who were suddenly dropped, does it?
Now it feels like even if the cash transfers continue for the remaining women,it might be at cost of some other important state expenses . What gets cut next... school funding,hospitals... who knows .
