Product quality,testing,certification… these things may sound boring,but when phone,shoes,toys or EV parts fail,then everyone understands importance ah.
On June 19,2026 ,Pralhad Joshi ,the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs,Food and Public Distribution,spoke at inauguration of new facilities at National Test House (NTH) in Mumbai . His main point was simple enough: if India wants to become global manufacturing hub,then quality certification has to become stronger and more trusted.
He also laid foundation for multi-storied residential accommodation project at NTH . This project aims to build 36 quarters at projected cost of ₹38 crore . Not flashy news maybe,but for institution staff and operations,this kind of facility also matters.
And one thing which stood out is history of NTH . It has been operational since 1912,so this is not some new department suddenly trying to become relevant . It has been part of product quality certification for more than century now.
Joshi said,"We must establish stringent standards within the organization,as it is poised to become one of leading quality assurance institutions globally," Joshi stated. Big claim,but also big responsibility because trust in Indian products will not come from slogans only.

- Joshi inaugurated Microbiological Testing Laboratory in Mumbai and Shoe Testing Facility in Ghaziabad .
- He spoke about testing needs in green hydrogen,electric vehicles,and AI technologies.
- Better testing capabilities are expected to reduce costs for consumers and improve product quality assurance .
And tbh,this is where larger point comes in . India is already being seen more seriously for products and services,but if country wants to be known as world’s factory,then quality complaints cannot keep coming again and again. Certification has to make buyers feel safe,not confused.
Joshi also referred to government commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform India into major manufacturing hub . He added,"Quality becomes paramount as we aim to be the world’s factory; our certification must instill confidence in consumers," he added.
He also spoke about improving product quality standards,including stricter rules on imported toys to protect consumers . That part is very relatable because cheap unsafe toys are not small issue,especially when children are using them.
Another interesting part was mobile manufacturing . Joshi highlighted that around 300 units are now producing mobile phones in India,with significant portion meant for export . That number shows scale is coming,but question is whether quality systems will keep pace with this speed…
And maybe that is real test now . India can manufacture more and export more,but if certification,testing and enforcement don’t become equally serious,then global trust will still remain work in progress…
