This drug ban news is actually serious ah,because Government of India has now put immediate ban on 16 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs . And honestly, when medicines being used by people are later found to have no proper medical justification,it does make you pause.
Union Health Ministry announced that manufacture, sale, distribution and supply of these medicines for human use is now prohibited nationwide . Not just one type of tablet also, this ban covers different categories like antibiotics, pain management combinations, antispasmodic drugs and dermatological formulations.
And tbh, most normal people don’t even know what fixed-dose combination drugs really mean . Basically, they contain two or more active ingredients in fixed proportions, but in these banned formulations, review found risks were more than benefits .
Some combinations named in ban include Acetyl Salicylic Acid with Ethoheptazine,Dicyclomine combined with Paracetamol and Clidinium Bromide, and Lactobacillus Sporogenes and Serratiopeptidase . These are not small names for regular patient to understand, but they matter because people may have used such medicines casually.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Immediate nationwide ban on 16 FDC drugs has been implemented.
- Ban covers antibiotics, pain relief, antispasmodic and dermatological products.
- Review started after directions from Supreme Court .
Supreme Court had directed proper assessment of existing FDCs to identify those which are irrational, unsafe or lack therapeutic value . After that,Drugs Technical Advisory Board formed expert committee for evaluation.
And this is where bigger issue comes in . Many people in India take medicines based on old prescription, chemist suggestion or family advice only. If such combinations are floating around without enough therapeutic rationale, then misuse becomes very easy.
Health ministry has now told state drug regulators and enforcement agencies to make sure ban is followed . Manufacturers and distributors also have to act quickly because once ban is immediate, stock movement cannot continue like normal.
But still, one uncomfortable question stays… how many people were already taking these 16 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs before this ban came in?
