Wow,another big news for Indian travelers ah . UPI has officially launched in Cambodia now. Feels like almost every few months,we are hearing about UPI going to some new country.
And this is a proper official launch . NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL),which is the global part of NPCI,has tied up with ACLEDA Bank Plc. for this. They even had a big formal event in Phnom Penh.
The event itself was pretty high-profile . H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, who is the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, was also present there. So you know it's a serious partnership .
And honestly, this is where it gets really convenient for us.
For anyone planning a trip, this means you can just use your regular UPI apps to pay at shops there . They are saying it will work at over 4.5 million merchant locations, including all the famous tourist spots and retail outlets. No more worrying about currency exchange all the time .
Few things to know about this whole plan:
- First phase is for Indian travelers to make payments at local merchants in Cambodia.
- Second phase will allow Cambodian visitors to use UPI here in India .
- Main aim is to improve tourism and economic relationship between both countries.
Even Ritesh Shukla, the Managing Director and CEO of NPCI International, said it’s a big deal . His exact words were,“Enabling UPI acceptance in Cambodia is significant step in this journey.” And it really is .
But it’s not just one-sided benefit . For Cambodian merchants,it opens up a whole new customer base of Indian tourists who are used to digital payments. Dr. In Channy,President of ACLEDA Bank, also mentioned how this will solve transaction and foreign exchange problems for travelers .
This whole thing is part of a bigger cross-border QR payment linkage between India and Cambodia . It just makes everything so much smoother . Tbh,it's amazing how a system we use for everyday chai and groceries in India is now becoming global like this.
It makes you wonder where UPI will go next… feels like the whole world is slowly getting connected through it…
