Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has given the green light for the construction of a significant 4-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur section of NH-83, with an allocation of ₹1,427.61 crore. This ambitious project spans 14.9 km and includes two additional Road Over Bridges (ROBs) on NH-129A and NH-134A. According to Gadkari, the development will greatly enhance connectivity between crucial industrial areas and port towns, which is expected to catalyze regional economic growth.
The bypass will start from Adiyakkamangalam–Thandalai and traverse significant locations such as Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, and Kidaramkondan, among others. Gadkari stated, "Once completed, this bypass will significantly alleviate congestion in Thiruvarur town, cutting travel time by around 15 minutes and enhancing road safety." The project's alignment will also facilitate better access to state highways and vital cultural sites, including the revered Thyagaraja Swamy Temple.
- Enhanced connectivity — The project connects major industrial zones with port towns.
- Improved road safety — The bypass will divert traffic from crowded areas.
- Reduced travel time — Commuters will save approximately 15 minutes.
In a separate initiative, Gadkari reviewed the quality and maintenance of national highway projects covering 4,335 km in Punjab and 3,332 km in Delhi and Haryana. He underscored the importance of accelerating the execution of highway projects and ensuring they are completed on schedule. He instructed officials to adopt modern construction technologies to improve durability and performance.
Gadkari also expressed the need for proactive measures to address challenges like waterlogging and erosion, ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow. His directives aim to enhance the overall infrastructure landscape in Tamil Nadu, contributing to better connectivity and economic development.
