Big police leadership change has happened in Manipur, and honestly, timing is not ordinary at all . Mukesh Singh,a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has arrived in Imphal to take over as new Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur, with formal appointment set for June 1 .
He is replacing Rajiv Singh, who has now been appointed Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat . And Rajiv Singh's tenure was not easy by any measure, because Manipur saw serious ethnic violence after it erupted on May 3,2023 .
And this is why this appointment feels more than routine transfer only . Manipur is still trying to regain stability and restore normalcy after months of unrest, and public trust is not something which comes back overnight .
Mukesh Singh was earlier serving as DGP of Ladakh . Before that,he handled sensitive positions in Jammu and Kashmir during major security challenges, especially at times when militancy pressure was high . So yes, government is clearly bringing someone with experience in difficult law and order situations.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Mukesh Singh replaces Rajiv Singh as Manipur DGP,with formal appointment set for June 1 .
- Ethnic violence began after Tribal Solidarity March on May 3 and has displaced thousands, with over 260 lives claimed .
- President's Rule was imposed from February 13, 2025,until February 4,2026 .
The appointment was confirmed by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) after proposal from Ministry of Home Affairs on May 15, 2026 . That detail matters because it shows this was not random state-level reshuffle, but decision coming from top level .
During his arrival,Mukesh Singh met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh . Chief Minister expressed confidence in Singh's ability to lead effectively and also stressed peace and public safety, which tbh is exactly where Manipur needs maximum focus rn .
But challenge in Manipur is not just about putting more police on road . Restoring trust among communities, working with different stakeholders and keeping law and order without making people feel more alienated… that is not small thing ah.
Rajiv Singh had to handle aftermath of violence which already left deep wounds across state . Now Mukesh Singh comes in with experience, but also with huge expectations from people who are tired of unrest, loss and fear .
And question is,can one leadership change really help Manipur move closer to calm,or is this just first step in much longer and harder road…
