When temperatures are sitting between 42 and 46 degrees Celsius, water shortage stops being normal summer problem and becomes survival issue.
Across Madhya Pradesh, people are reportedly dealing with declining groundwater levels, irregular water supply and drinking water crisis in both urban and rural areas . And at same time, whole issue has now turned into political fight between Congress and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Congress is blaming BJP government for failing to give safe and reliable drinking water despite spending on schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission . Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar accused state government of wasting thousands of crores on water schemes while ordinary people are still struggling for basic water. He said,"Today, the people of Madhya Pradesh are yearning for basic necessity like water."
And tbh, that line hits hard because this is not luxury issue ah . Water is most basic thing, and if people are still walking long distances or buying tankers in this heat, then anger is obvious.
Few things standing out clearly in this crisis:
- Congress is criticizing BJP for inadequate water supply.
- Residents are reportedly forced to drink unsafe water in some places.
- Water issue has become political flashpoint ahead of elections.
In districts like Umaria, the problem is very visible, with residents reportedly walking long distances to fetch water . In Tanda village, villagers are even digging pits for muddy water. That image only tells enough about how bad ground situation has become.
Even Bhopal, known as "City of Lakes," is facing serious stress . Reports say borewells are drying up and Narmada water supply has significantly reduced. Many residents are now depending on private water tankers, and price of 5,000-litre tanker has gone up from ₹350 to between ₹450 and ₹500 .
Then there is contamination issue also . Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari led protests in Indore over water shortage and contamination, and he claimed nearly 98% of water samples collected in city had harmful bacteria . If that figure is correct, then this is scary on another level .
BJP has strongly rejected these allegations and accused Congress of doing "cheap politics" while defending its own work on crisis . But for people standing in queue for water or paying extra for tankers, political blame game probably feels very far away.
And this is where whole thing feels uncomfortable… when heat is rising, water is drying, and parties are fighting, who exactly is listening to people stuck in middle?
