So,some big news coming from judiciary side . Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai has been officially appointed as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court . This is quite a significant development .
And the appointment will be effective from June 4,2026 . Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced this on his social media platform X,confirming decision was made by President .
This decision came after recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium, which is headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant . They had their meeting on May 22 and endorsed her name for the post.
And this appointment comes as current Chief Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo is set to retire from the position . So this is a leadership transition for the Patna High Court .
Honestly, this is where things get really interesting. Justice Rai has quite a backstory.
Her journey is actually very inspiring ah. Here are few things that stand out:
- First woman from Sikkim to serve as Chief Justice of a High Court .
- Extensive legal background, practicing in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court.
- Served as Acting Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court multiple times .
Born on July 12, 1964,in Gangtok, she did her schooling in Gangtok and Kurseong . Then she went to Lady Shri Ram College at Delhi University for Political Science, where she even got a merit scholarship from Sikkim government. She got her LL.B . degree from Campus Law Centre in 1989 .
She started her career in 1990 after enrolling with Bar Association of Delhi . She practiced before both Delhi High Court and Supreme Court as Advocate-on-Record. Her appointment as judge of Sikkim High Court on April 15,2015,was historic moment only, making her the first woman from Sikkim to get that high judicial post .
And her work with the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority is also very well known . It shows a commitment beyond just courtroom work .
It's always good to see someone with so much experience and so many firsts to her name get these top roles . You just wonder what new perspective she will bring to the Patna High Court...
