Wow,so some major news is coming out about US and Iran that sounds pretty serious. Seems like a big shift might be happening .
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on June 2 that Iran is now suddenly open to discussing its nuclear program . And this is about parts of program they previously refused to even talk about. This is big change ah.
And according to Rubio, this isn't happening in vacuum. He said this change in attitude is because of recent US military actions against Tehran, under something called Operation Epic Fury . Basically,he's connecting their new willingness to talk directly to US military strikes which he says weakened them a lot.
He actually said this during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. He noted,"There is the prospect before us... that they have agreed to negotiate aspects of their nuclear program that just month ago, just a year ago, they were refusing to even mention."
And honestly, this is where whole thing gets very intense.
Rubio defended the military action saying it stopped Iran from hiding its nuclear plans behind its regular army power . He said,"Iran's desire to build a nuclear weapon was going to be effectuated behind a conventional shield." And then he said something really shocking, tbh. "There is no Iranian navy . It lies at bottom of the ocean." That is such a blunt statement to make in public hearing .
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Rubio claims US actions have seriously damaged Iran’s defense.
- Iran's new willingness to negotiate could be major diplomatic shift.
- All this tension is also impacting big global shipping routes like Strait of Hormuz.
But Rubio also mentioned the blockade on Iranian shipping, which he claims is costing them hundreds of millions of dollars every day . At same time,he was careful not to promise too much . He said just because talks are possible,it doesn't mean US will get what it wants .
So now everyone is just watching to see what happens next. Is this real opening for diplomacy,or just Iran buying time after getting hit hard? Hard to say rn…
