So Marco Rubio was in front of Senate Foreign Relations Committee recently and his points are quite direct ah. He was basically defending Trump administration's foreign policy and his whole argument is that every action must be for United States' national interests.
And he was very clear about it. He said administration has changed its focus to national security, economic strength, and sovereignty. Basically moving away from what he called years of misguided priorities. It's a very strong 'America First' message.
Rubio said Washington's diplomatic and aid programs should be there to help American interests only . He even had one very direct quote: "Our foreign policy, first and foremost, must always be what is in the national interest of the United States of America."
And honestly, that's a very blunt way to put it.
He also said US government is not some charity but is there to win in global arena . This whole idea is that programs will be judged based on what results they bring for America directly.
Few key points that he made:
- Focus on National Interests — Rubio emphasizes that foreign policy must prioritize US interests.
- Strategic Aid Programs — Aid initiatives are now closely tied to national objectives.
- Coalition Building — Successful diplomacy highlighted through hemispheric alliances .
As one example,he pointed to developments in Western Hemisphere . He talked about building coalition of friendly countries there to deal with security issues and help with economic prosperity. This is supposed to show how they are using American power to benefit its own citizens.
And while discussing President Trump's proposed State Department budget,Rubio did say that Congress would have final say in appropriations process . He said he welcomed the debate on it. Even Committee Chairman Jim Risch praised some of the administration's work, like trying to reduce illegal immigration and fighting drug trafficking.
This whole thing feels like a major change in how America sees its place in the world . Not about global cooperation for its own sake, but about what America gets out of it .
You have to wonder what this means for other countries who have relied on US for long time… it's definitely a different way of doing things…
