If Micro,Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are expected to compete globally, then technology gap cannot be ignored anymore.
And this came up during recent ‘SME Working Group Meeting’ held under BRICS Partnership on the New Industrial Revolution (PartNIR) . Representatives from BRICS member nations discussed how MSMEs can play bigger role in economic growth, innovation and supply chains .
But main concern is simple only, many small businesses still do not have same access to technology, digital tools, skills or finance that bigger companies enjoy . So when people say MSMEs should join global value chains,it sounds good, but ground reality is not that easy ah .
The Ministry of MSME stressed need for stronger digital inclusion, better innovation capabilities and more technology readiness among MSMEs . And honestly, this is where actual challenge begins, because without support, small units can get left behind very fast .
Few things standing out from meeting:
- Strengthening collaboration among BRICS nations for technology access, innovation ecosystems and skills development for MSMEs.
- Focus on financial access in upcoming meetings, because finance is often barrier for MSMEs.
- Promotion of sustainability-oriented growth so MSMEs can stay viable in global markets.
And tbh, access to finance is one point people keep repeating because it is still daily struggle for many small businesses . Ideas are there, workforce is there, but money, systems and market connection are not always there.
The meeting also became space for BRICS countries to exchange policy ideas and best practices around MSME growth . Ministry of MSME is planning more meetings and forums to keep discussing these issues, especially as part of India's BRICS Chairship in 2026.
But big question is whether all this discussion will actually reach small businesses sitting in industrial areas, small towns and local clusters . Because policy rooms can talk about global value chains, but MSME owner on ground needs tools, training, finance and access in real time…
And if that gap stays, then this whole dream of making MSMEs globally ready will keep sounding good on paper only…
