India losing 0-1 to Zimbabwe in third-place play-off at The Valley in London on May 30 is not just one bad result,it is second straight defeat after 0-2 loss against Jamaica in semifinals .
And worse part is,India could not find back of net throughout competition . For any team trying to build confidence, that is not small thing ah,especially when match was there for taking in few moments.
Head coach Khalid Jamil had reacted to earlier defeat by making four changes in starting lineup . Vikram Partap Singh,Rahim Ali,Macarton Nickson, and Ricky Shabong came in,with Ricky Shabong making his first start for national team just days after his international debut as substitute.
Few things standing out clearly from this match:
- India started with some energy but again failed to finish chances .
- Zimbabwe got decisive penalty after foul on Washington Gift Navaya, and Prince Dube scored in first half.
- Warriors stayed compact and kept handling India's attacking pressure till end .
In early minutes,India did show some promising play, but Zimbabwe looked dangerous too . In fourth minute, one sharp cross came into Indian penalty area and Sandesh Jhingan had to react quickly to clear danger . That moment only showed Zimbabwe were not going to sit quietly.
And then came turning point in 33rd minute . After sustained possession,Zimbabwe got penalty and Prince Dube put spot-kick into bottom-right corner while Gurpreet Singh Sandhu went other way . Simple finish, but big damage.
Second half had more urgency from India . Chhangte and Vikram tried to push tempo, and for some time it looked like equalizer might come . But Zimbabwe's counter-attacks kept creating tension, and Sandhu had to make big save in 56th minute from Shane Maroodza's powerful shot.
India's best chance came soon after, when long throw led to deflected strike from Chhangte, but Zimbabwean keeper pulled off strong save to keep score at 1-0 . Later in 86th minute,Vikram sent one curling cross which just missed Edmund Lalrindika, and that felt like one of those “almost” moments India keep collecting.
Nikhil Barla also got debut in 89th minute, but by then Zimbabwe defense was managing things smartly . India pushed, ran, tried, but final touch was missing again.
Now Unity Cup journey is over, and India will prepare for two friendly matches against Tajikistan during FIFA International Match Window on June 5 and June 9 . But bigger question stays there only… where are goals going to come from?
