An 18-year-old athlete from Gujarat going to Hong Kong and winning gold in decathlon is not small thing ah .
Rahul Jakhar won gold medal in decathlon at 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong with score of 7,185 points . And this was not just medal only, that score also created new Indian Under-20 national record.
What makes it even better is where he comes from . Jakhar is from Charvada village in Valsad district, and his family roots are in Rajasthan's Sikar district . Later his family shifted to Vapi, where they entered construction business.
And from there to Asian U20 gold… that journey clearly did not happen overnight .
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Rahul Jakhar scored 7,185 points and broke previous Indian Under-20 national record .
- He trains at Sports Authority of Gujarat's High-Performance Centre in Nadiad .
- He now wants to represent India at Commonwealth Games and Olympics .
Jakhar also thanked his coaches after victory in Hong Kong and spoke about facilities provided by Gujarat government . Tbh,when young athletes openly mention training support,it shows how much proper system matters behind one medal.
His coach Shivam Upadhyay also pointed out how difficult decathlon actually is,because it has ten different athletic events . So this is not like excelling in one area and finishing job . Body, mind, stamina, technique, everything gets tested again and again .
One interesting part is how Jakhar even entered athletics . He reportedly started running after seeing athletes train during evening walk with his father . Sometimes life turns from such simple moments only, and years later same kid is standing with gold medal.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi congratulated him and spoke about Gujarat's focus on building strong sports ecosystem . He also mentioned that under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel,Gujarat is working on world-class sports infrastructure for athletes .
And honestly, this is where bigger question starts . If one Rahul Jakhar can come from Charvada village and reach this level with right training and support, how many more young athletes are waiting somewhere in small towns, just needing that one proper track, one coach, one chance…
