This India-Oman CEPA news may sound like usual trade agreement stuff at first, but honestly,it can matter lot for Indian exporters . Effective June 1,2026,the India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) will launch, and main attraction is zero-duty access for many Indian exports.
Finance Ministry announced this update and said agreement can boost trade relations between both countries . CEPA was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Muscat in December 2025,and now it is finally moving toward actual rollout.
And biggest thing here is tariff relief . CEPA allows zero-duty access on over 98% of Oman's tariff lines, which basically covers nearly all of India's exports to Oman . For businesses in Gems & Jewellery,Textiles,Leather,Footwear, and Pharmaceuticals, this is not small thing ah,because full tariff elimination can directly change margins and pricing.
At same time,India is also giving something back . India will liberalize tariffs on approximately 77.79% of its tariff lines, capturing 94.81% of imports from Oman by value . But sensitive products like agricultural goods will stay excluded from concessions, which makes sense because domestic pressure around farm products is always high.
Few points standing out clearly in this agreement:
- Zero-duty access comes on over 98% of Oman's tariff lines for Indian exports.
- Indian service providers can target Oman's $12.52 billion global services imports.
- Contractual service suppliers can get permitted duration of stay extended to two years.
And tbh, services part may become more interesting than people expect . CEPA includes forward-looking services package for sectors like education and healthcare, where Indian professionals and companies already have strong experience.
Mobility framework is also part of this deal . It allows increased quotas for intra-corporate transferees and extends stay period for contractual service suppliers to two years . For professionals looking at Oman market, this can quietly open more doors than headline tariff cuts only.
This agreement is also coming when India is busy making more trade arrangements globally, including recent deals with the UK and New Zealand . It also comes during shifts in global trade due to recent tariff challenges faced by US,so India clearly wants more options and less dependence on any one direction.
But real question is what happens after June 1,2026 . Paper agreement is one thing, actual benefit reaching exporters, workers, and smaller businesses is another…
