Norway Chess 2026 is getting properly heated now,and fifth round in Oslo had that full drama feeling . Not just normal wins and draws, but pressure, time trouble,Armageddon battles and some really painful mistakes also .
And biggest talking point for Indian fans was clearly World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju vs Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu . All-Indian clash itself brings extra tension because both players know each other so well, and one small slip can change whole game.
Praggnanandhaa actually seemed to have upper hand first . But Gukesh kept fighting, kept creating problems, and late in game tide started turning. Under pressure and with clock also becoming issue,Praggnanandhaa faltered, and Gukesh grabbed win from there . Tbh,these are exactly type of games where Gukesh looks dangerous.
But round was not only about that match ah . Wesley So also pulled off impressive win against world No. 1,Magnus Carlsen . That is not small thing at all, especially in classical chess where Carlsen usually survives even bad positions.
Game went into long strategic fight, and So slowly got control in endgame . Carlsen defended as expected, but this time Wesley So executed his plan cleanly and got win that will surely give him big momentum in tournament.
Few things standing out from fifth round:
- World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju beat Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu after late turnaround.
- Wesley So defeated world No. 1,Magnus Carlsen in classical game.
- Divya Deshmukh takes sole lead after victory over Zhu Jiner.
And in women's section,Divya Deshmukh had big moment of her own . She defeated Zhu Jiner in tense endgame, and that win pushed her to sole lead. During time scramble also, she stayed precise, which is honestly very hard when board is messy and clock is shouting at you.
Other women's games ended in draws, including Bibisara Assaubayeva vs Anna Muzychuk . But Anna Muzychuk later won Armageddon tiebreak and collected extra points,so even drawn games were not really quiet.
Alireza Firouzja also maintained his lead after drawing with Vincent Keymer and then winning in Armageddon . So overall, fifth round gave strong performances by Indian players, especially Gukesh and Divya, but tournament is still very much open.
And now second half becomes more interesting because pressure will only increase from here . Gukesh has gained ground,Divya is sitting on top,and players like Magnus Carlsen,Wesley So and Alireza Firouzja are all still in story…so who actually holds nerve when next round gets messy?
