On May 30, 2026,the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army paid tribute to late Colonel Sonam Wangchuk and troops of 3 Ladakh Scouts for their bravery in Battle of Chorbat La in Batalik Sector during Kargil War in 1999.
This was not some normal battlefield story ah . Chorbat La was fought at altitudes exceeding 18,000 feet, where even breathing properly becomes challenge, forget fighting enemy fire and holding ground .
In post shared on X,the Corps remembered Colonel Wangchuk’s own humble words: “What I did at Chorbat La was my duty, not something extraordinary.” And tbh, that line itself says so much about mindset of soldiers who do things most of us cannot even imagine.
During 'Operation Vijay,'his leadership helped India get early successes in reclaiming strategic positions occupied by enemy forces . 3 Ladakh Scouts, known as 'Snow Warriors,'were right there in those harsh conditions, carrying out assaults and reconnaissance missions while facing snow blizzards, enemy fire and rough terrain.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Battle of Chorbat La was fought at altitudes exceeding 18,000 feet.
- Soldiers faced snow blizzards,enemy fire,and harsh terrain .
- Major Wangchuk established important observation posts against enemy troops.
And this is why Battle of Chorbat La is still remembered with so much respect in India's military history . It was not just about one location,it was about holding nerve in place where nature itself was against them.
Colonel Wangchuk's leadership and tactical acumen played big role in securing early gains for India in that strategically important area . Later,Colonel Wangchuk was posthumously awarded Maha Vir Chakra for extraordinary bravery during 'Operation Vijay.'
His legacy as 'Lion of Ladakh' still carries weight, because stories like this are not just old war memories . They remind people what soldiers actually go through when country is under threat.
And when Fire and Fury Corps pays tribute like this,it also quietly asks us to remember cost behind every secured border, every reclaimed post, every name written in military history… how many of us really pause and think about that enough…
