This Gir news is honestly very upsetting,especially because it involves eight lion cubs . For wildlife people,Gir is not just another forest area,so hearing about cub deaths due to suspected babesiosis feels quite worrying.
Arjun Modhwadia,the State Forest and Environment Minister,said no new deaths have been reported in last 48 hours . That does give small relief,but situation still feels tense because disease angle is not confirmed fully yet.
Suspected cases have come from areas outside protected Gir sanctuary,mainly Gir Gadhada taluka and Babarkot region of Amreli district . And that part matters,because if infection is moving in surrounding areas also,then forest teams have to stay alert nonstop.
Samples from deceased cubs have now been sent to Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre for analysis,and results are expected within three to four days . Minister Modhwadia also said,“Whether these deaths occurred due to Babesia or some other reason can only be confirmed after the medical report is received.”
Few things standing out in this situation:
- Eight lion cubs have died due to suspected cases of babesiosis .
- Lions within 10-kilometre radius of affected areas have been isolated and kept under observation.
- Teams are carrying out vaccination,treatment and de-ticking operations in Gir and surrounding regions .
And tbh,this is where concern becomes bigger than just one disease report . Babesiosis is tick-borne and infects red blood cells,causing weakness and severe anemia in animals . For cubs especially,that is not small thing ah.
Forest department teams and veterinarians from Junagadh Veterinary College were reportedly mobilized immediately . Lions around affected belt are being monitored,and de-ticking work is going on to stop possible spread.
At same time,Minister Modhwadia has said other recent lion deaths were because of natural causes like infighting and old age,not linked to suspected disease . Still,when Gir has past outbreak memories also,people will naturally worry more.
No new deaths in 48 hours is good sign only,but final medical report is still pending . Till then,question remains same… was this contained in time,or is Gir facing something more serious quietly…
