Because Delhi has heard many clean transport promises before, and air quality problem is not small thing ah.
The Delhi government is now set to launch pilot program involving hydrogen fuel cell buses . This was announced on May 28,and it is being planned with Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and NTPC.
Pankaj Kumar Singh, the Delhi Transport Minister, said hydrogen fuel technology is part of Delhi’s shift towards cleaner public transport . His exact words were,"Delhi is steadily moving towards clean, future-ready public mobility solutions," and that line clearly shows government wants to push this as next big step .
And honestly, hydrogen fuel cell buses do sound interesting because they are known globally for operational efficiency and zero tailpipe emissions . For city like Delhi, where pollution becomes daily headache especially in winter, this kind of experiment will get attention .
Few things standing out in this plan:
- Delhi government is partnering with NTPC for hydrogen bus initiative .
- Hydrogen fuel cell buses are known for zero tailpipe emissions.
- Stakeholders are finalizing an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for operational deployment.
The proposed plan is to run these buses under Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model . Under this,DTC will manage operational deployment, and operational expenses will be covered at approved GCC rates.
But cost side is where things become more interesting . Extra support for costs is being explored through NTPC's CSR initiatives,so funding model is clearly still being worked out in practical way.
At same time, this pilot is meant to add to Delhi’s existing efforts for reducing emissions and improving air quality across National Capital . If it works,it can make public transport cleaner without adding more smoke to already stressed roads.
Still, tbh, real test will not be announcement or MoU . It will be whether these buses can run regularly, affordably, and without becoming another pilot project people forget after few months…
