There is some very concerning news coming out from Bangladesh regarding a potential defense deal for JF-17 fighter jets . And honestly, the whole thing feels a bit strange.
Apparently, retired veterans of Bangladesh Air Force are themselves raising alarms about this proposal . They are pointing out that these jets, made by Pakistan and China, were basically ineffective during India's Operation Sindoor .
One retired Air Commodore even said anonymously that Pakistan had to rely on U.S. assistance to stop conflict, which shows how bad the JF-17's performance really was . That is not small thing ah.
But this whole deal seems to be moving forward . Bangladesh’s new prime minister,Tarique Rahman,is expected to visit China soon, and many are speculating that this JF-17 acquisition will be finalized then.
And tbh, this is where it gets really murky.
Analysts are saying this deal looks more about increasing Chinese military sales than actually helping Bangladesh's air force . China has also reportedly not been very honest with Dhaka about the jet's operational reliability.
Then there are the safety issues . There have been recent incidents of JF-17 jets crashing in Pakistan, and even talk of efforts to cover up one crash involving a training aircraft . This just adds to the doubts .
Few things standing out clearly in this case:
- Veterans are questioning JF-17's effectiveness, especially after seeing it fail in real conflicts .
- The deal is getting linked to politics, raising questions about Bangladesh's alignment with China and Pakistan.
- There is a serious need for proper review, especially with the high cost and safety record.
And we can't forget the tragic aviation disaster in 2025 involving a Chinese-made F-7 aircraft that cost so many lives . The memory of that is still fresh for many.
To commit up to USD 720 million for this Sino-Pakistani project when country is facing economic fragility is very big decision . And it seems to be happening without much public discussion or independent economic analysis.
This whole thing just feels like big decision being pushed through very quietly… you have to wonder what is the real reason behind it all.
