So I just saw this news about Union Home Minister Amit Shah meeting a delegation from Nepal's Rastriya Swatantra Party . And it feels like more than just a standard political meeting .
The main meeting happened on Tuesday in New Delhi with RSP team headed by Rabi Lamichhane . Official line is that India is committed to strengthening bilateral relations.
And Union Home Ministry even put out a message on X about it . Apparently Shah congratulated Lamichhane on RSP's recent election victories and wished their new government success. It's all very friendly on the surface.
And honestly, this is where things get interesting.
Both sides talked about usual things, like strong ties based on shared culture and history . Shah also said relationship is built on "deep civilizational ties and strong people-to-people connections". This line always comes up in India-Nepal talks ah .
But the RSP delegation also seemed very keen to understand how Indian politics works, especially BJP's organizational side . This wasn't just a courtesy call .
Before meeting Shah, the Nepalese delegation had whole session with Nitin Nabin, the BJP National President . This was part of some ‘Know BJP’ initiative, which is a whole thing in itself. Nabin explained the party's ideology and how they do grassroots engagement.
Few points that stood out from their talks:
- Political engagement — The RSP delegation met with BJP National President Nitin Nabin to discuss party ideology and grassroots engagement.
- Democratic participation — Discussions included the role of youth in politics and their influence on public discourse and leadership .
- BJP's governance model — Nabin outlined the party’s focus on development, public service, and effective welfare delivery.
They also discussed the role of young leaders, even Generation Z,in politics . It seems everyone is trying to figure out how to get younger people involved in democratic processes.
These kinds of party-to-party interactions are important for sure . But you have to wonder what the RSP is really trying to learn from BJP model, and what it means for Nepal's own politics going forward…
