Not noisy politics, not drama, but end of service life which stretched over four decades.
General Anil Chauhan, the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff (CDS),wrapped up his military career in New Delhi with farewell ceremony . He called his tenure "very satisfying and excellent," and that line itself shows how personal this day must have been for him .
The day started with ceremonial Guard of Honour at South Block lawns . For most people it may look like formal event only, but for someone who has worn uniform since 1981,this is not small thing ah .
And after that,he went to National War Memorial and laid wreath for soldiers who made ultimate sacrifice for nation . That part feels more emotional than ceremonial, because it was also his final tribute in uniform .
He told reporters,"It’s a matter of great honour for me to superannuate with a Tri-Services Guard of Honour." And tbh, that sentence carries lot of weight when coming from country’s highest-ranking military officer.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Distinguished military service — Over 40 years in various key roles
- Wreath laying at memorial — A tribute to fallen soldiers
- Focus on inter-service cooperation — Enhanced jointness among forces
General Chauhan’s journey began in 1981 when he was commissioned into Indian Army . Over years,he held many command, operational, and staff appointments, and built reputation as seasoned military leader .
His service was also recognised with awards like Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Sena Medal, among others . During his time as CDS,he worked on reforms meant to improve operational effectiveness and better cooperation among Indian Armed Forces.
But one thing also stands out here . His extended tenure was sanctioned by Appointments Committee of Cabinet in September 2025,which allowed him to continue serving until end of May 2026 . So this farewell was not sudden,it was final chapter of planned transition.
And now as he moves from military life to civilian life, question is what kind of influence officers like him continue to have after uniform is put away…
