This Cauvery River bridge update actually feels like one of those local infrastructure stories which people may ignore at first, but daily commuters between Srirangam and Tiruchi will understand pressure very well . Traffic congestion there is not small thing ah.
State Highways Department is now pushing construction of new bridge across Cauvery River, and delayed opening of Mettur dam has strangely given them more working time . Dry river condition has become advantage only, because earlier strong river flow was disturbing foundation work again and again .
Project was sanctioned at estimated cost of ₹106 crore in 2024-25 state budget . Construction officially started in July 2024,but because river flow was strong, work on foundational parts could not move smoothly for some time .
As of June 20,2026,around 70% of bridge's construction has been completed . Department official has expressed confidence that project can be finished by September, and honestly, that deadline will matter lot if water levels change again.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Around 70% work is completed as of June 20,2026.
- Land acquisition involves 2,283 square metres of land and is expected to conclude soon.
- New bridge will work along with existing bridge to manage traffic better.
But land part is still one headache . Acquisition on Chinthamani side has been finalized, but Mambazha Salai side is delayed because of pending litigation . Until that gets cleared, approach roads cannot properly begin.
And that is where whole timeline becomes slightly uncomfortable . Bridge construction may be moving fast, but without approach roads, people cannot really get full benefit . After land acquisition is done, focus will shift to roads leading to new bridge.
Design wise, new bridge will serve vehicles travelling in opposite direction of existing bridge . Existing bridge will continue handling traffic coming from Mambazha Salai,so idea is to create dual-bridge system and reduce daily pressure .
Tbh,this sounds practical on paper . But with river levels, land issues, litigation and September target all moving together, question is whether work can really stay on track till end…
