Air quality going from 207 to 123 after rainfall and strong winds is not small thing ah,because usually once pollution starts rising, people just keep waiting for some relief .
On May 29,2026 ,Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced immediate revocation of all actions under Stage-I of Graded Response Action Plan ( GRAP ) across National Capital Region ( NCR ). Basically,GRAP-I restrictions which were in place have now been pulled back .
This happened after Delhi's daily average Air Quality Index ( AQI ) came down from 207 to 123 . That 123 level puts Delhi in 'Moderate' air quality category, which is still not perfect, but definitely better than being stuck in 'Poor' zone.
And CAQM's Sub-Committee did not just wake up and decide this casually . They reviewed air quality situation along with meteorological forecasts from India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). After that, they felt conditions had improved enough to revoke GRAP-I measures.
Thing is,these measures were originally implemented on May 19 because pollution levels were rising again . So in around 10 days, weather helped change whole mood of situation.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Delhi's AQI dropped from 207 to 123,indicating 'Moderate' air quality.
- CAQM will continue to assess air quality and meteorological conditions regularly.
- Agencies have been told to follow environmental guidelines so improvement does not slip away .
But this is where usual Delhi-NCR problem comes in . Rain and strong winds helped this time, but can authorities maintain same seriousness when weather stops helping? Because we have seen this pattern before only, air improves for few days and then suddenly people are again checking AQI apps every morning.
Local agencies in NCR have now been directed to ensure compliance with statutory directions issued by CAQM,along with rules and guidelines from Ministry of Environment,Forest and Climate Change and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). That sounds technical, but simple point is this: don't let air quality fall back into 'Poor' category.
The Sub-Committee will keep monitoring air quality parameters and review situation periodically . Fair enough. But tbh, real test starts after rain effect fades and winds slow down…
Because if Delhi needs weather miracle every time to breathe slightly better, then what exactly are we fixing?
