This Ebola news from Mumbai is making people nervous, but honestly,BMC seems to be trying to stay ahead before anything reaches panic stage . After World Health Organization's (WHO) classification of Ebola outbreak as public health emergency in parts of Africa like Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda,Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now increased watch.
And yes, this does not mean Ebola has entered India . That part needs to be clear first only. What BMC is doing rn is more like precaution and preparation,so if any suspected viral hemorrhagic fever case appears, system is not caught sleeping.
Kasturba Hospital has been kept as main facility for isolation of suspected cases . Since Kasturba Hospital is Mumbai's specialized center for infectious diseases, this move is not surprising. A new 10-bed isolation ward has also been created there.
But BMC has not stopped there. An 8-bed isolation ward has also been set up at Cama Hospital, basically to add more backup if situation ever demands it . In public health matters, extra beds and trained staff are not small thing ah.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- Kasturba Hospital has new 10-bed isolation ward for suspected Ebola cases.
- Cama Hospital has also got 8-bed isolation ward for extra readiness.
- KEM,Sion,Nair, and Cooper hospitals have been told to prepare their teams.
Mumbai’s Deputy Mayor,Sanjay Ghadi, reassured citizens that there is "no need for panic" and said BMC is fully equipped to handle any potential cases . That reassurance matters, because Ebola name itself can create fear very fast among people.
At same time,BMC has also directed major municipal medical colleges like KEM,Sion,Nair, and Cooper hospitals to keep readiness protocols in place . Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has also released formal advisory for standard infection prevention and control practices .
And this is where frontline workers become biggest focus. MARD has stressed strict hand hygiene and proper compliance with clinical waste disposal laws,so contamination risk stays low . Officials are also saying Ebola is not airborne in typical community settings and spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids .
So overall, this feels like one of those situations where authorities have to prepare seriously without creating unnecessary public anxiety . People should not panic, but at same time, health system cannot be casual either… because with infections like this, waiting too long is never comfortable.
