South Coastal Railway Zone finally getting inaugurated and set to start operations on June 1, 2026 feels like big emotional moment for many in state.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has welcomed inauguration, calling it historic for Andhra Pradesh . On ‘X’,he said,"The inauguration of the South Coast Railway Zone, centred in Visakhapatnam, marks historic milestone. Our decades-long dream is being realized."
And that line about decades-long dream is not small thing ah . Because this railway zone was not some sudden announcement,it has been part of state politics and public expectation since bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014 .
As per details,South Coastal Railway Zone will have headquarters in Visakhapatnam . It will include Guntakal,Guntur, and Vijayawada divisions from South Central Railway, which means North Andhra and nearby regions may see better railway focus now.
Few things standing out clearly here:
- South Coastal Railway Zone will start operations on June 1, 2026 .
- Headquarters will be in Visakhapatnam, with Guntakal,Guntur, and Vijayawada divisions included.
- This was promised during bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
Naidu is saying this move will improve connectivity, create employment opportunities and push industrial growth in region . And tbh,for places like North Andhra, better rail infrastructure can change daily life also, not just business numbers .
Centre had formalized establishment through gazette notification earlier this month . Announcement was made back in 2019,but present NDA government led by Naidu, who took office in 2024,has pushed it faster now.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also laid foundation stone for zonal headquarters in Visakhapatnam in January 2025 . That made it clear government wanted to show movement on railway infrastructure in state.
But now real test starts only after operations begin . Announcements, foundation stones and notifications are one side, but people will judge by trains, connectivity, jobs and whether local economy actually feels change…
And for Andhra Pradesh, this is more than railway office shifting to Visakhapatnam . It is about whether long promised development finally reaches common people,or again remains something people keep waiting for…
