This India-US pharma connection is honestly bigger than many people casually realise . US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has now said that United States gets nearly 40% of its generic medicines from India, and that is not small thing ah.
He was speaking at Advancing Partnership in Research and Innovation event at Indian Institute of Technology, where he made it very clear that America is not buying so much from India by accident . His line was direct: "There is a reason the United States does that: it is because we trust India. These are critical life-saving ingredients that are needed in the United States."
And that statement says lot about India's pharmaceutical industry . Because when country depends on another country for medicines, especially generic medicines,it means confidence is already built over years, not overnight .
Gor also called India and US relationship one of the defining partnerships of 21st century . Big words, but trade numbers also show same direction only . In last two decades, bilateral trade has gone from just $20 billion to over $220 billion . That jump is massive, and clearly not just some diplomatic talking point .
Few things standing out here:
- United States sources nearly 40% of its generic medicines from India.
- Bilateral trade moved from just $20 billion to over $220 billion in last two decades .
- Amazon plans to invest $35 billion by 2030,while Microsoft is set to invest $17.5 billion in expanding cloud infrastructure in India.
And now there is also talk of interim trade agreement on horizon . Gor indicated that negotiations for trade deal are nearing completion, expected to unlock mutual prosperity . Sounds positive, but of course, trade deals always have fine print that people understand much later.
American companies are also putting serious money into India . Amazon and Microsoft are boosting investments, and that clearly shows they see Indian market as safe and useful for long run . Gor also reassured potential investors that India is secure destination for investment .
Technology side is becoming even more interesting rn . Amazon's $35 billion by 2030 plan is linked with AI-driven initiatives and job creation . Microsoft is set to invest $17.5 billion in cloud infrastructure in India, and Google is working on subsea cable landing terminal project valued at around $15 billion .
Gor summed it up by saying,"These are incredible things that we have seen just from a handful of companies." And honestly,he is not wrong . From medicines to AI to cloud to cables under sea, this partnership is spreading into places normal people don't even think about daily.
But at same time, when one country depends so much on another for medicines, and companies pour billions into same market,it also raises bigger question… how balanced will this partnership stay when pressure starts coming from both sides?
