Madurai traffic issue is not looking like normal city headache anymore, especially around Viraganoor junction . And honestly, when matter reaches Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court through two public interest litigation petitions, you know people are properly fed up.
This week, new petition again pushed for flyover at Viraganoor junction, saying this spot has become major pain point for commuters . This junction connects Madurai with southern districts and also works as important route to Madurai International Airport,so traffic load is naturally heavy .
Advocate G. Theeran Thirumurugan, representing petitioners, said traffic volume at this junction has increased a lot over years . Current road setup is just not enough now,and during peak hours people are stuck badly.
And this is not small inconvenience ah . Thousands of vehicles reportedly face long waiting time, especially during festivals, political events, and dignitary visits . Anyone who has crossed such junction during rush time knows how one signal can eat half your mood only .
Few things standing out in this whole issue:
- Traffic volume increase — Viraganoor junction serves as major link for vehicles moving from northern to southern districts .
- Need for technical assessment — Authorities are being asked to study traffic density and safety concerns properly.
- Historical context of petitions — A similar petition was filed in 2024 for a flyover between K.K. Nagar junction and the Agriculture College.
Petitioners are also asking authorities to revisit existing feasibility studies and technical reports regarding Viraganoor junction . Basically, not just random flyover demand, but asking them to look again at what studies already said and what current ground situation has become .
Another advocate,A. Arun Ramnath, also pointed out how congestion is making travel difficult for advocates and general public going to High Court . He said road facilities need improvement, and suggested flyover between K.K. Nagar junction and the Agriculture College could reduce congestion.
But problem is wider than one junction . Area has many commercial establishments, and traffic becomes even more burdensome on weekends and holidays . Madurai Corporation and other authorities have already faced court directions earlier to remove obstructions affecting traffic flow.
In one related case, petition even led to removal of entrance arches that were adding to congestion . So this is clearly not first time city traffic planning has been questioned .
And with tourism growing, especially because of nearby places like Keeladi, pressure will only keep rising if roads remain same . Flyovers may help, but proper studies before construction also matter… otherwise Madurai may just keep moving from one jam to another…
