One Assembly discussion and suddenly you can see old Cauvery fears coming back into picture .
During recent session in Tamil Nadu Assembly,Edappadi K. Palaniswami,general secretary of AIADMK and former Chief Minister,raised concern over state government's demand for separate tribunal to resolve Mekedatu dam proposal . His main worry was simple but serious: if new tribunal comes in,it may create more legal complications in already sensitive water matter .
And this is not small thing ah,because Cauvery water is directly connected to farmers,fields and daily survival in many areas . For people outside,this may look like political argument,but for farmers this is about whether water will actually reach them or not.
Palaniswami also pushed for more inclusive discussion on Mekedatu issue . He reminded Assembly that earlier AIADMK and DMK governments had held all-party meetings during major concerns,including Cauvery water disputes . Basically,his point was that on water issue,one party alone should not be seen as taking call.
Few things standing out clearly here:

But government side did not accept this criticism quietly . Minister for Public Works,Aadhav Arjuna,defended present stand and said Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had studied developments around Mekedatu dam over past four decades before taking decision .
He also said government is focused on farmers' concerns and fair water distribution . Now that sounds fine on paper,but tbh in water disputes,trust is always bigger problem than statement itself.
Then E.V . Velu,DMK legislator,added another angle by warning that too much debate may show disunity among Tamil Nadu political parties . His fear was that this kind of public division could encourage Karnataka government in its own water management decisions .
And that is where issue becomes more uncomfortable . Tamil Nadu parties want to protect state interest,but if they fight too openly,Karnataka may read that as weakness only . At same time,if there is no debate,people will ask whether all voices were heard.
Mekedatu dispute is not just legal file or Assembly speech . It is tied to Cauvery,agriculture,farmers and long-running tension between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka . Question is,whether political unity can actually happen here,or whether same old blame game will keep running while farmers wait for water…
