This Tamil Nadu mining issue is not small thing ah,because land acquisition always becomes emotional very fast . And now G. Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister for Coal and Mines, has openly appealed for support from Tamil Nadu government and people.
On June 21,2026 ,he was speaking during press conference at BJP’s State unit office in Chennai . Main focus was land needed for critical mineral mining projects, especially those connected to Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) in Cuddalore district.
And honestly, this is where matter becomes sensitive . Government is looking at mineral resources and local economy, but people usually look first at land, livelihood and what happens after acquisition.
Reddy said he hoped both current DMK administration and previous TVK government would cooperate in process . His exact words were,"I have requested both the old and new governments to assist with the land acquisition policy related to critical minerals. I also appeal to the people of Tamil Nadu to extend their support for this initiative."
The Centre’s pitch is that mining operations can bring money to Tamil Nadu through premiums, royalties, and funds under District Mineral Foundation (DMF) . Also, projects are being presented as something which can help local communities through CSR activities.
Few points standing out clearly here:
- Revenue generation for Tamil Nadu through premiums, royalties, and District Mineral Foundation (DMF) funds .
- Corporate social responsibility initiatives linked to local communities.
- Land acquisition concerns, with Reddy saying minor issues would be resolved continuously.
But tbh, people hearing “land acquisition” usually don’t relax just because revenue is promised . In many places, concerns are not only about compensation, but also about environment, relocation, jobs and whether promises made today will actually be followed tomorrow.
On questions about allegations of irregularities within NLC,Reddy said he had checked with local administrative bodies and Collector for accurate information . He also acknowledged that if any small issues arise, they are being rectified as part of ongoing process.
And this appeal is coming at time when mining sector is already under scrutiny for environmental and social impact . Government is trying to speak about revenue sharing and community benefits, but local support will decide how smoothly things move.
For now,it feels like Centre is asking Tamil Nadu to trust process, while people on ground may still be asking what exactly they will lose and what exactly they will get…
