This whole Tamil Nadu Governor address controversy has become more like political fight than normal Assembly formality . And honestly,Udhayanidhi Stalin's reaction shows DMK is not treating this as just routine disagreement.
Udhayanidhi Stalin,the Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu,hit out strongly after Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar delivered his address on June 18, 2026 . According to him,what should have been serious policy outline turned into something made for ruling party promotion.
And that “social media reels” comment was sharp only . He basically said address sounded less like governance speech and more like ready-made clips for online image-building .
During press briefing at State Secretariat,Udhayanidhi accused government of using Governor's speech for self-praise . His exact remark was,"It is an address intended for the Chief Minister (C. Joseph Vijay) to blow his own trumpet and engage in self-promotion," which is not small attack ah.
At same time,DMK MLAs also wore badges saying,"Open your mouth,CM," clearly trying to push accountability point in visible way . This was not just verbal criticism,they wanted message to be seen also.
Few things standing out clearly in his criticism:
- Governor's address lacked authenticity,as Udhayanidhi claimed Governor read government's speech verbatim without alterations .
- He alleged blame-shifting,saying government was putting failures on previous DMK administration instead of handling current issues.
- He raised concerns over rising crime rates,including 175 sexual offenses and 65 murders since new government took office.
And tbh,this is where matter becomes more serious than social media politics . Because once numbers like 175 sexual offenses and 65 murders enter discussion,then argument cannot remain only about speeches and image .
Udhayanidhi also said Governor's Address did not reflect real governance situation and was full of contradictions,with no genuine achievements being shown . His point was that current administration had only recently come to power and was mostly extending earlier DMK initiatives instead of showing something fresh.
He also attacked Chief Minister's focus on social media engagement,claiming government is more busy with appearances than actual problems faced by people . That line will connect with many voters if they already feel state issues are being ignored .
But bigger question now is whether Chief Minister (C. Joseph Vijay) will directly answer these charges or let this become another back-and-forth political episode…
