Washington,DC is going through major change rn,and honestly,it does not sound like smooth beautification project at all . With city preparing for 250th anniversary celebrations of United States,so many famous spots are turning into construction zones instead of places people can actually visit .
And one of big examples is Lafayette Square near White House . Visitors are coming with excitement,but reaching there and finding barricades,dust,restricted access… not small thing ah,especially when trip was planned around historic places.
Julie,who came to celebrate her marriage,said something that really captures mood: "The irony is that it’s neither safe,nor beautiful." And honestly,that line says a lot because renovation is supposed to improve city,but people are feeling opposite only.
Local preservationists are also not sounding very happy . Rebecca Miller,executive director of DC Preservation League,said many visitors are disappointed when important sites are not accessible because of construction . Her words were,"This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for some people,and it’s disappointing when they can’t access certain sites,"
Few things standing out clearly here:
- East Wing of White House is set for $600 million renovation,with taxpayer money funding half of it.
- Historic sites like reflecting pool and Arlington Memorial Bridge are under restoration,so public access is getting affected .
- Many tourists are finding their visit spoiled because construction is blocking access to historical places.
And then there is East Wing demolition to make way for massive ballroom . Cost has gone beyond initial estimates,and that is why people are questioning whole thing even more,especially after Trump’s claims that private donors would cover expenses.
National Park Service is also working on restoring fountains across city and wants them operational by Fourth of July . On paper,it may sound like preparation for celebrations,but on ground it seems to be creating this rushed,chaotic feeling everywhere .
But critics are clearly worried that these projects are putting Trump’s vision ahead of historical character of Washington,DC . Planned triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery is also being called possible eyesore because it could disturb low-rise skyline of city.
And when construction cranes start dominating view near White House,people will obviously ask what exactly is being celebrated here . American history,public access,or one person’s idea of grandeur…?
