On January 29, 2026, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced a transformative plan for Tripura to become a leading data storage hub in Northeast India with a new Airtel data center. This project, valued at ₹200 crore, aims to significantly enhance the state’s data storage capacity to meet the increasing demands driven by growing academic and economic activities within the region.
Currently, Tripura has three data centers with a combined capacity of 1,800 terabytes, which is insufficient given the rapid digital expansion in the state. The new data center will feature a storage capacity of 5 MW, which is anticipated to attract more IT-enabled industries and foster a robust digital ecosystem in Tripura.
- Global data production insights — India produces 20% of global data but has only 3% of the world's storage capacity.
- Job creation potential — The new center will create local employment opportunities for Tripura's IT professionals.
- Educational foundation — Tripura's strong educational background will support its tech-driven economy.
This initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a Viksit Bharat, aimed at increasing India’s overall data storage capacity from 1.5 GB to 8 GB by 2030. Chief Minister Saha emphasized the importance of this development for local employment, stating that many IT professionals currently migrate to cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai for better opportunities.
Tripura is recognized as the third fully literate state in India, following Goa and Mizoram. With seven universities and several specialized institutions like the National Institute of Technology and the National Forensic Science University, the state possesses a well-educated youth population poised to drive its transition into a technology-focused economy. This data center project represents a significant step towards realizing Tripura's potential as a digital hub in the Northeast.
