This D.K. Shivakumar story is one of those political moments where you can almost feel power shifting in Karnataka . As per this report,he is on verge of assuming Chief Minister's position after resignation of Siddaramaiah, and honestly, this is not small thing ah.
D.K. Shivakumar is already current Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka and President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) . So this is not some sudden rise from nowhere. His political career has been running for more than four decades, and that kind of staying power in politics says lot.
His journey started in early 1980s with National Students' Union of India (NSUI) during college years . Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi encouraged his early political involvement, and even though he lost in 1985 against former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda,he came back strong with his first Assembly win in 1989 from Sathanur constituency.
And from there,he became eight-time MLA . That is not just party backing, that means ground connection also remained alive for long time.
Few things standing out in his journey:
- Ministerial roles since 1990 included Minister for Prisons and Home Guards, where he pushed rehabilitation reforms.
- As Energy Minister from 2014-2018,he handled major solar power expansion including Pavagada Solar Park.
- His leadership during 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections helped Congress get major victory.
His Energy Minister phase is also big part of his image . Karnataka’s solar capacity went to over 6,000 MW during that period, and Pavagada Solar Park turned barren lands into serious energy source. His “Surya Raitha” initiative also got attention for helping farmers through solar energy.
But his career has not been clean easy road only. In 2019,he was imprisoned for 50 days over allegations of money laundering . Sonia Gandhi visiting him during that period seems to have strengthened his Congress loyalist image even more among party workers .
Since becoming KPCC President in 2020,Shivakumar worked on rebuilding Congress organisation across Karnataka, especially at grassroots level . That work showed during 2023 elections, and later he became Deputy Chief Minister with portfolios like Water Resources and Bengaluru City Development.
Now as Deputy Chief Minister,he has been linked with government's “Five Guarantee” schemes which reportedly benefit over seven crore people in state . Government also announced infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹1.5 lakh crore under his guidance, mainly around urban development and modernising Karnataka’s infrastructure.
His water focus is another big part of current pitch. Completion of Cauvery Phase V added 775 MLD of drinking water supply to Bengaluru, and ongoing Cauvery Stage VI and Yettinahole project are being presented as long-term water security efforts for millions .
And if he really steps into Chief Minister role now, question is not whether he has experience, because clearly he has plenty . Real question is whether same organisation strength and political survival instinct can handle pressure of running Karnataka from top chair…
